Algeria has recently surpassed Pakistan, securing the distinction of hosting the world’s third-largest mosque, capable of accommodating 1,200,000 worshippers.
As per a report by Al Jazeera News, Algeria has finally inaugurated the world’s third-largest Africa’s largest mosque.
The Grand Mosque of Algiers was inaugurated by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday.
Locals call it Djamaa El-Djazair. As many as 1,200,000 worshippers can pray at once. It features the world’s tallest minaret at 265 meters (869 feet). The only mosques bigger than it are in Saudi Arabia’s Makkah and Madina.
The seven-year construction resulted in a sprawling modernist structure (nearly 70 acres) adorned with wood and marble, and infused with Arabic and North African influences. It even boasts a helicopter pad and a library fit for a million books.
The massive mosque, built by a Chinese company, reportedly cost nearly $900 million to construct.
Earlier the third largest mosque in the world was the Grand Jamia Mosque of Pakistan, located in Bahria Town Karachi. Its capacity is 800,000.
