A terrifying incident recently went viral involving a gas-filled balloon explosion inside an elevator in Mumbai, India. The event occurred on the evening of February 2, 2026, at Anmol Tower in Goregaon West.

The Incident
CCTV footage from inside the elevator captured the chilling moments.

A 21-year-old student, Himani Tapriya, entered the lift first. She was followed by a delivery worker, Raju Kumar Mahato, who was carrying a large polythene bag containing about a dozen gas-filled balloons intended for a birthday party.

As the lift doors closed and it began to ascend, the balloons suddenly exploded into a massive fireball, completely engulfing the interior of the cabin for several seconds.

Despite the intensity of the flames, the occupants managed to rush out as soon as the doors opened at the next floor.

Casualties and Injuries
Himani Tapriya suffered serious burn injuries to her face, right arm, neck, and stomach.

The delivery worker also sustained burns to his face and hands.

A third individual in the lift also reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The Cause: Hydrogen vs. Helium
Authorities believe the balloons were filled with hydrogen gas instead of helium. While helium is an inert (non-flammable) gas, hydrogen is extremely flammable and can ignite from a tiny spark, static electricity, or even the heat from the elevator’s electronic components.

Because elevators are confined spaces, the leaking hydrogen quickly reached a dangerous concentration, leading to the flash fire.

Legal Action
The police have registered a case of negligence against the balloon shop owner, T.K. Jaiswal.

Investigations revealed that the employer failed to provide safety instructions or proper equipment for transporting such hazardous materials.

Safety Note: This incident serves as a grim reminder to always verify that decorative balloons are filled with helium, as cheap “gas balloons” sold by unauthorized vendors are often filled with dangerous, flammable hydrogen to save costs.
