Chinese herb shows promise in treating hair loss

A traditional Chinese medicinal herb used for more than a thousand years may offer a new treatment option for male pattern baldness, according to a study published in the Journal of Holistic Integrative Pharmacy.

Researchers found that Polygonum multiflorum, commonly known as He Shou Wu, could help combat androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss among men worldwide.

Male pattern baldness develops gradually as hair follicles shrink, producing thinner, shorter hair before growth eventually slows or stops altogether. Existing treatments such as Finasteride and Minoxidil can be effective but may cause side effects in some users, including sexual dysfunction and scalp irritation.

According to the study, Polygonum multiflorum appears to act through several biological pathways associated with hair growth and regeneration. Researchers said the herb may help reduce the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone considered one of the primary causes of male pattern baldness.

The review also found that the herb may protect hair follicle cells from premature death, improve blood circulation to the scalp and activate biological signals involved in tissue repair and regeneration.

Lead researcher Han Bixian said the findings connect traditional medical knowledge with modern scientific understanding.

“Our analysis bridges ancient wisdom and modern science,” Bixian said.

Researchers reviewed laboratory studies, clinical reports and historical herbal records to assess the herb’s potential role in hair
