BBC star comedian and charity campaigner Maddy Anholt has died aged 35, having been diagnosed with a “rare and aggressive form of brain cancer” last year.
The family of Anholt, who had been diagnosed with the disease after giving birth to her daughter, confirmed her passing on Wednesday night (September 13) in a GoFundMe post.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Maddy Anholt, our beloved daughter, sister, twin, friend, wife and mother, who left this world on Wednesday 13 September, aged 35,” said a statement.
“You may know that shortly after the birth of her incredible daughter Opal last year, Maddy was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. She handled the ensuing surgery and treatment with astonishing grace and courage, accompanied every step of the way by her family and devoted husband, Ben. She spent her final weeks at her parents’ home, bathed in love and calm, and with the sounds of nature all around.”
As an actor she appeared in sitcoms such as Sunny D and Jerk, Radio 4’s Sketchtopia, and The Emily Atack Show. In 2017 she made Radio 4 sitcom No Smoke.
Her first book, about unhealthy romantic relationships, How To Leave Your Psychopath, was published early in 2022 and received critical acclaim and attention across the globe. Her first novel, a thriller, is expected to be published next year.
Anholt was also prolific as an online comedy creator, with sketches released including Valentine’s Day Scam and, during lockdown, P.E. with Maddy. In 2020 she co-wrote and starred in Kelly, a short film about a woman taking care of her parents’ dog.
