Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee in Sweden known for carrying out several controversial Quran burnings in Sweden, has been shot dead near Stockholm, the Associated Press confirmed on Thursday.
As per details, he was shot inside his apartment in Sodertalje city near capital Stockholm during a live TikTok video.
As per local media, the police reached the spot after receiving the information of a shootout at around 11 pm on Wednesday night (local time) and were looking for the assailant. The police have detained some people for questioning.
The motive behind the alleged attack on Momika remains unknown. It should be noted that, he had received death threats from radicals after publicly burning the holy book of Muslims under police protection.
In 2023, Momika gained international attention for organizing public demonstrations in which he desecrated and burned copies of the Quran. His actions triggered diplomatic tensions between Sweden and several Muslim-majority countries, as well as riots and unrest in various locations.
