ISLAMABAD: The Shehbaz Sharif government has appointed PMNL leader Ayaz Sadiq as country’s new law minister. His appointment came almost a week after Azam Nazeer Tarar resigned from his post due to controversies triggered at Asma Jahangir conference.

As per the notification issued in this regard, Ayaz Sadiq has been given portfolio of Law and Justice, in addition to his duties as minister for Economic Affairs.

Azam Nazeer Tarar, it may be recalled, had resigned on October 23 following criticism by lawyers community as well as federal government circles for two of his choices. At the meeting of Supreme Judicial Counci, Tarar voted in favor of elevation of junior judges, drawing ire of the lawyers’ fraternity.

In another incident, AzamNazeer Tarar was the Chief Guest at Asma Jahangir conference when anti-Army slogans were chanted. He and other guests remained silent on this rhetoric, while some of them sitting at the stage were seen smiling to the ‘voices of dissent’.
In his resignation, Azam Nazeer Tarar had written “I have had the great honour and privilege to serve my country as the federal minister for law and justice under the able leadership of Mian Mohammad Shehbaz Shareef, prime minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. “However, due to personal reasons, I am unable to discharge my duties as the federal minister.”
