KARACHI: Law enforcement agencies have arrested gold trader Ayaz Memon Motiwala for blackmailed builders and receiving extortion amounts in Karachi.
Sindh Rangers and police conducted a joint operation in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and arrested him along with his accomplice Suleiman. The search for other suspects is underway, police said. Ayaz Memon Motiwala’s guards were also arrested and his vehicle was also seized.
According to reports, Ayaz Motiwala blackmailed the builders of Karachi and received crores of rupees in extortion by claiming he was part of a special team. He has been booked under Anti-Terrorism Act for receiving around Rs 10.4 million from a builder in Nabi Bakhsh locality.
Ayaz Motiwala reportedly received extortion money worth Rs 220.44 million from more than 40 builders in the city. Motiwala’s group also includes the accused Asif Baloch, Farhan, Saleem Nizamani, Qadir and raids are been conducted to arrest them.
According to sources, his informer or frontmen would come to any building first and deliver the message that Ayaz Motiwala has been called to his office. When the builder came, they would reach a deal or else he would threaten to blackmail them with his video and social media team.
Ayaz Memon Motiwala has reportedly confessed to investigating officers after the arrest. The statements of more than forty builders have also been recorded who have confirmed paying extortion.
Sources said that Ayaz Memon Motiwala took extortion of up to Rs 10 million from two builders while he also demanded extortion from two builders who have a lucrative partnership.
