Thar, a region known for its abundant coal reserves, has now unveiled another treasure within its sands. The Sindh Department of Information Technology, collaborating with experts, has made a groundbreaking discovery – the sand from Thar is exceptionally well-suited for manufacturing computer chips.
Experts assert that utilizing Thar sand in chip production could substantially address the burgeoning demand for digital products. Recognizing the potential, the Department of Information Technology has proposed the establishment of a silicon chip wafer factory to the government.
Constructing a chip wafer factory necessitates key resources like coal, sand, water, and electricity. Among these, Thar sand stands out as the optimal choice due to its quality and accessibility.
The estimated cost of establishing the chip wafer factory is approximately $450 million. This significant investment could potentially be accommodated within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project framework. Plans are underway to allocate 150 acres of land in the Tharparkar area of Islamkot for the factory’s construction.
The Sindh Information Technology Department has diligently completed the initial paperwork for the Chip Wafer Foundry project. The proposal has been forwarded to the relevant ministries for thorough review and subsequent approval.
The potential establishment of a chip wafer factory not only highlights the economic potential of Thar but also signifies a significant stride towards technological advancement and self-reliance in Pakistan. Thar’s diverse wealth, encompassing coal and now silicon-rich sands, could herald a new era of prosperity for the region and the nation as a whole.
