KARACHI: A breakthrough has been reported in the murder case of Dua, a 7-year-old girl found dead in the sea near Keamari Gate No. 1 in Karachi’s Manora area, police said the other day.
According to the police, the child was strangled to death after being allegedly raped. Officials added that the main accused was killed in a police encounter during a late-stage operation.
Police said the deceased was Dua, a resident of the Baba Bhatt area of Jackson, who had gone missing the previous day. During the investigation, the accused was identified as 21-year-old Babu, son of Pir Muhammad, described by police as the girl’s neighbor.
Authorities stated that the accused allegedly placed the child’s body inside a bag, transported it by boat to Maripur, and then dumped it in bushes in an empty plot.
Police said the accused was identified with the help of evidence collected at the scene and CCTV footage. They added that, acting on a tip-off, personnel conducted an operation near the Mubarak Mosque, during which the accused opened fire. Police said he was killed in retaliatory firing.
Following the incident, residents of Baba Bhatt expressed deep anger and said they refused to provide burial space for the accused in either of the island’s cemeteries.
