Terrorism resurgence

There has been a sudden resurgence in terror activities for the past few days. These incidents have occurred at the same time as the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) is holding rallies and protests challenging the writ of the state, raising doubts whether there is any link between them.

The latest incident occurred in Peshawar when a powerful explosion struck a seminary, killing seven students and left several injured. From the tragic Army Public School (APS) which remains etched in our memories to this madrassah, children have unfortunately been the biggest victim of terrorism. A few days earlier, another incident occurred on the outskirts of Quetta, killing three people and leaving several injured.

While Pakistan had made considerable improvement in the law and order situation, the resurgence in terror activities is a cause for concern. The NACTA had issued a security alert for possible incidents in Quetta and Peshawar, and their main fears have come true. The federal capital as well as parts of Sindh and Punjab have now been placed on a threat alert. It is imperative that law enforcement and security agencies remain vigilant to prevent any untoward incident.

The security alert had been raised a few days before the PDM held a political rally in Quetta. Despite warning from the Balochistan government, the opposition alliance went on with their rally and lashed out at state institutions. This could be a coincidence but the threat level and spike in terror activities at the same time when the anti-government protests are being held have raised serious questions.

This reminds us of a statement by Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2018 when he raised questions about why there was a sudden rise in terror attacks along the border when Nawaz Sharif is in trouble. He had even blamed India for giving a boost to Nawaz Sharif by diverting attention from more pressing issues. Now Imran Khan finds himself on the other side as he is in power and Nawaz and his allies have turned against him. Will Imran Khan call this even a mere coincidence?

The PML-N has blamed the incident on the prime minister, stating he has pitted state institutions against the opposition. Terror incidents should not be politicized and must be vehemently condemned. We must also realise whether our enemies are being strengthened while we squabble with our own infighting.
