ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Justice (retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal, has rejected allegations of rigging in the ongoing elections, insisting that the process was conducted strictly in accordance with the constitution and law.

Speaking to a private TV program, Mughal said that all political parties had demanded elections be held under the supervision of the army and Rangers, and the Commission ensured their presence.

“Despite the situation in Azad Kashmir, people came out to vote. Allegations of rigging are false — people vote for whomever they want,” he stated.

The CEC acknowledged receiving complaints, including from Chaudhry Latif Akbar’s constituency in Muzaffarabad, and said some reports from Mirpur division could be assessed with evidence.

However, he stressed that no court or institution can decide until allegations are proven, adding that anyone is free to file a petition.

The AJK CEC emphasized that the third phase of elections will cover three seats in Bagh, one in Haveli, and one in Poonch district, with decisions on polling in Poonch, Sidhnoti, and Thorad expected within two days.

He reiterated that the Election Commission will not come under pressure and that strict security arrangements are in place at sensitive polling stations.

More than 4,000 security personnel have been deployed, with the armed forces’ Quick Response Force also present to protect voters.

“Transparent elections were held in Azad Kashmir. There was no rigging by the Election Commission,” he added.

This statement comes, it may be added here, amid mounting criticism from the PPP, which has alleged irregularities, fake voting, and even attacks on its leaders and workers.

Reports of violence in Mirpur and Rawlakot, largely ignored by mainstream media, continue to cast a shadow over the credibility of the electoral process.
