Karachi Traffic Police have announced a series of reforms aimed at improving traffic management, including plans to remove Qingqi rickshaws from major roads and allow only metered rickshaws to operate across the city.

Speaking to the media, DIG Traffic Karachi Pir Muhammad Shah said the department is working to remove Qingqi rickshaws from main roads as part of efforts to improve traffic discipline.

He added that all conventional rickshaws without functional fare meters will also be phased out, with only metered rickshaws permitted to operate.

The DIG further revealed that a revised e-challan policy is being prepared to provide relief to motorists. He acknowledged that the automated e-challan system can occasionally generate incorrect tickets and said the new policy would address such issues while ensuring greater transparency.

Despite these challenges, Pir Muhammad Shah said the introduction of the e-challan system and lane marking has significantly improved traffic flow across the city. He added that motorcyclists travelling in the fourth lane are being issued electronic traffic tickets as part of ongoing enforcement efforts.

Highlighting other concerns, the DIG disclosed that nearly 45,000 vehicles in Karachi are currently being driven by individuals other than their registered owners. He also said vehicles found with fake registration number plates are being impounded and handed over to the relevant police stations for legal action.

Pir Muhammad Shah further announced that the Karachi Traffic Management Company is being established to strengthen traffic planning and management across the metropolis.

He added that strict enforcement measures against heavy traffic violations have contributed to a 45% reduction in fatalities caused by heavy vehicle accidents, describing the decline as a significant achievement in improving road safety.
