Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has dismissed claims of an advertising ban on the Dawn Media Group, asserting that the government has disbursed Rs 860 million (86 crores) to the organization over the last thirteen months.
The minister’s statement comes amid a series of protests and condemnations from journalists’ bodies regarding alleged financial strangulation of the media house.

In a statement aired on a private TV channel on Saturday, Tarar offered to share the specific details of these disbursements to clarify the government’s position.
Tarar claimed that the federal government provided advertisements worth Rs 86 crore to Dawn Media Group during a 13-month period.
The minister expressed disappointment over the group’s internal management, stating that despite receiving substantial government funds, the media house has proceeded with firing employees.
Tarar emphasized his readiness to make the data public to counter the narrative of an “unannounced ban” on the group.
The Developing Media Standoff
This statement serves as a direct rebuttal to recent claims made by the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ).

These organizations had previously alleged that the government was using advertising as a “coercive tool” to influence Dawn’s editorial policy.
The minister’s remarks suggest that the government views the current crisis at Dawn as a matter of internal corporate mismanagement rather than state-sponsored economic pressure.
