Lahore: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has recovered 4,730 kilograms of expired food items from the warehouse of a well-known superstore and sealed the premises for serious violations of food safety laws.
According to officials, the PFA enforcement team conducted a raid on the warehouse located on Jayabga Road, Lahore, where a large quantity of expired goods was found stored along with fresh stock.
During the operation, thousands of kilograms of flour, dry fruits, pulses, gram flour (besan), maida, porridge and other food items were recovered. The authority confirmed that all the expired and unhygienic products were destroyed on the spot.
Director General Punjab Food Authority said the warehouse was mixing expired stock with fresh supplies, which is a grave violation of the Punjab Food Authority Act. He added that this negligence posed a serious risk of expired products being supplied to the market and reaching consumers.
“Due to this malpractice, there was a serious fear that expired goods would be supplied to citizens. Immediate action was taken and the packing warehouse has been sealed until rectification,” the DG said.
He reiterated that there will be no compromise on public health. “Every avenue of adulteration and substandard food in preparation and supply will be strictly curbed. Superstores and warehouses will have to strictly follow the rules, otherwise they will face strict legal action,” he warned.
The Punjab Food Authority has appealed to citizens to check manufacturing and expiry dates while purchasing food items and to report any complaints regarding substandard or expired food on the PFA helpline 1223.
