Wasim Khan to step down as ICC GM after four-year tenure

DUBAI: Wasim Khan is set to leave his role as the International Cricket Council’s General Manager of Cricket at the end of June, marking the end of a four-year stint at the global governing body, Dawn has learnt.

His impending departure is the latest in a series of high-profile exits from the ICC’s senior leadership, with several officials having moved on over the past two years.

Wasim, who took over the cricket management role in May 2022 following Geoff Allardice’s elevation to the ICC Chief Executive position, is understood to have secured a new role set to begin in July. Allardice himself has since departed the ICC and been replaced as CEO by Sanjog Gupta.

Before his administrative career, Wasim carved out a notable place in English cricket history as the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket. The left-handed batter represented Warwickshire, Sussex and Derbyshire across 58 first-class and 30 List A matches, with his most celebrated chapter coming during Warwickshire’s county championship-winning campaign in 1995, where he averaged nearly 50 through the season.

His transition into administration proved equally distinguished. He served as Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Cricket Club and earlier at the Cricket Foundation, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the Chance to Shine initiative into one of the United Kingdom’s leading cricket charities.

He then served as CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for nearly three years before joining the ICC in 2022.

One of the defining challenges of Wasim’s time at the ICC was navigating an increasingly congested global cricket calendar, with the rapid proliferation of T20 and T10 franchise leagues squeezing the available window for international fixtures.

Despite the pressure, the Future Tours Programme (FTP) for 2023-27, finalised during his tenure, recorded a net increase in the volume of international cricket. The period also saw a landmark moment for the women’s game, with the unveiling of the first-ever Women’s Future Tours Programme — a development widely regarded as a significant step forward for gender equity in the sport.

Wasim’s exit adds to a notable turnover in the ICC’s senior ranks. Chris Tetley, who headed the events department, has departed and been succeeded by Gaurav Saxena. Alex Marshall, the long-serving head of the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit, has also left, with former senior police officer Andrew Ephgrave appointed in his place.
