Viral video of Karachi land grabbing claim turned out FAKE narrative

KARACHI: A viral video featuring Chandni Kumari — granddaughter of the late Dr. Vijay Kumar, a respected doctor from Shikarpur’s Hindu community — sparked widespread outrage on social media and quickly gained traction on platforms like X (Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook, with many users framing it as yet another example of minority communities facing property disputes in Pakistan. However, the claim later turned out to be FAKE news.

In the viral video, Kumari was seen protesting in Karachi’s Defence area, alleging that a “qabza mafia” had illegally occupied a plot of land linked to her family.

Sindh’s Interior Minister, Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, took immediate notice of the viral clip and ordered an inquiry through relevant authorities, including the Karachi police and SSP Shikarpur. However, subsequent investigations revealed that Kumari’s claims were unsubstantiated. Officials reported that she was not the rightful owner of the property in question, and the allegations of illegal occupation did not hold up under scrutiny.

The Chandni Kumari protest video was misleading. Official investigations confirmed that her allegations of land grabbing were not supported by evidence. While the viral clip drew attention to broader concerns about property disputes, in this case, the claims themselves were false.

The incident highlights how quickly viral videos can shape public perception before facts are verified. While Kumari’s claims were found to be incorrect, the controversy reignited discussions about property rights and the challenges faced by minority communities in Sindh.

It might be pertinent to mention here that in Pakistan, public sentiment often gravitates toward siding with the oppressed or minority communities, reflecting a collective instinct to amplify their voices in pursuit of justice. This dynamic was evident in the reaction to Chandni Kumari’s protest video, where many citizens raised their concerns to the maximum extent, eager to support what appeared to be a case of exploitation.

Yet, in the rush to champion the vulnerable, a crucial step was overlooked — verifying the authenticity of the claims. The incident serves as a reminder that while solidarity is vital, unchecked narratives can inadvertently spread FAKE news and distort the truth. The episode underscores the need for responsible reporting and fact-checking, especially when sensitive issues of land disputes and minority rights are involved.
