The United States of America (USA) praised the election of Maryam Nawaz as the first chief minister in the history of Pakistan on Monday, terming it a groundbreaking moment for democracy in the country.
Addressing questions during a scheduled press briefing, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed the United States’ eagerness to collaborate with Maryam Nawaz to enhance the full integration of women into Pakistan’s political landscape.
“Her selection as chief minister is a milestone in Pakistani politics,” Miller stated, emphasizing the significance of Maryam Nawaz’s role. He outlined the U.S.’s commitment to working with Pakistan more broadly, aiming to foster greater inclusion of women in political life, the economy, civil society, and decision-making spaces. Miller asserted that a more inclusive Pakistan would be a stronger nation.
However, when confronted with a follow-up question regarding allegations against Maryam Nawaz related to presenting a fake document in Calibri font, Miller declined to comment on specific details, asserting that such matters were internal to Pakistan. Nevertheless, he reiterated the belief that Maryam Nawaz’s selection as chief minister was indeed a milestone for the country.
Regarding queries about Shehbaz Sharif’s election as the prime minister of Pakistan, Miller refrained from providing specific comments but emphasized the enduring value of the U.S.’s long-term partnership with Pakistan. He underscored the critical importance of a democratic Pakistan to U.S. interests, noting that engagement with the new Prime Minister and his government would focus on advancing shared interests between the two nations.
