NEW YORK: United Nations has urged the international community to continue helping Pakistan, which has been shouldering the burden of millions of Afghan refugees over the past 40 years.
Talking to reporters at a regular briefing in New York, UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said caring for the Afghan refugees is not solely Pakistan’s responsibility but the international community also needs to help.
He said part of the reason for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to Pakistan was to bring attention to the plight of the Afghan refugees.
Earlier, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres met his visit in Pakistan appreciated Pakistan for hosting millions of Afghan refugees.
During an event in Islamabad the UN secretary-general met with the refugees in Pakistan, from Afghanistan, Yemen and Tajikistan.
He lauds the government and people of Pakistan for having generously hosted the world’s largest protracted refugee population over a period of three decades in the mainland.
He said that he was grateful to Pakistan for their hospitality, added that the organisation is not doing well financially as the number of refugees has augmented worldwide but finances have not sufficient, he regretted.
Expressing serious concern over the plight of millions of Afghan refugees, Guterres has urged on the international community to enhance its engagement, employ innovative solutions and pro-active joint advocacy to end the world’s largest prolonged humanitarian crisis.
