ISLAMABAD: Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari has said transgender centers are being established across the country to extend help to this community.
Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad, the minister said, “People who are transgender are also human beings, they too have a right to education and live a dignified life.” Mazari said that Pakistan has one of the most progressive laws protecting the rights of the trans community, adding that progress has been made to implement it.
“The government is focusing on enforcement of the laws pertaining to the protection of human rights,” she said. The minister further said that child labor has been proscribed through legislation. Mazari also said that the provincial authorities will also be requested to follow the suit.
The minister informed that under Juvenile Justice System Act, 2018, juvenile courts have been established in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab and Islamabad. She disclosed that the other laws such as those relating to senior citizens, journalists, persons with disabilities and minorities are also on the cards.
Mazari said that campaigns have been launched to create awareness amongst the people about child abuse and women’s inheritance rights.
Dr Mazari said a toll-free helpline for legal advice on human rights violations has been established to facilitate women’s access to justice under certain laws. She said trained lawyers have been deputed to respond to all such cases online and free of cost.
