KARACHI: Three more cases have been registered against PTI Senator Azam Swati in Karachi over controversial tweets on Sunday.

According to details, the first information reports (FIRs) were registered against Azam Swati in different police stations of Karachi – Clifton, Darakhshan and Orangi.  All three first information reports (FIRs) were lodged by citizens.

Earlier in the day, a local court authorized the Federal Investigation Agency to physically detain Senator Azam Swati for two days (FIA).

The PTI senator was detained by the FIA in connection with several contentious tweets directed at government institutions, and he appeared before the judicial magistrate today.

Senator Swati was requested to be physically detained for eight days by the investigating agency from the sitting judge Waqas Ahmed Raja. In addition to the PTI’s Babar Awan and Faisal Chaudhry, the court also saw the FIA prosecutor.

The Judge earlier reserved his decision over the FIA plea for physical remand of Azam Swati. Later, the judicial magistrate granted two days’ physical remand of Swati to the FIA.

Over a month after receiving post-arrest bail from a court in the nation’s capital, Azam Swati was detained again in the same case.

The court had noted in a written verdict that “the charge of instigation for sedition deserves more scrutiny under the relevant articles.”

“The intention and objective of the petitioner’s tweet will prove after recording evidence in the trial,” the court stated, adding that the accused, a 74-year-old man with no prior convictions, “will prove after recording evidence in the trial” what his intentions and goals were with his tweet.
