In response to criticism of The Marvels’ underwhelming opening weekend at the box office, Iman Vellani stated she was pleased with the movie.
The most recent MCU movie, starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Vellani, failed to leave an impression on Marvel fans, grossing only $46.1 million in the US and $109 million worldwide on its first weekend of release.
Vellani (who plays Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel) told Yahoo News that she didn’t want to spend too much time reflecting on box office numbers as they are out of her control.
“I don’t want to focus on something that’s not even in my control, because what’s the point? That’s for [Disney CEO] Bob Iger,” she said.
The actress went on, saying box office results had “nothing to do” with her. “I’m happy with the finished product, and the people that I care about enjoyed the film,” the actress said. All we can expect for with these movies is to have an authentically enjoyable experience while watching them. It’s not very profound, it takes place in space, it features superheroes, and it’s about sisterhood and cooperation. It’s an enjoyable film, and I’m overjoyed to be able to show it to others.”

After a dismal premiere, The Marvels went on to break yet another unwelcome record for the franchise by seeing the worst-ever box office decline for a superhero movie in contemporary history.
Its second weekend at the US box office saw a drop of 78%, taking just $10.2 million.
Despite the poor box office receipts, critics have given The Marvels positive reviews; Digital Spy, for example, gave the movie a four-star rating, calling it a “charmingly fun, silly, action-packed intergalactic ride led by three charismatic superheroes”.
