Despite the government setting the sugar price at Rs173 per kilogram, most retailers are selling it for as high as Rs200.
According to details, sugar is being sold at Rs190 to Rs200 per kilogram in Hyderabad, while retail markets in Karachi are offering it at Rs180 to Rs190 per kilogram, causing concern among consumers. In Quetta and Peshawar as well, sugar is not available below Rs180 per kilogram.
Meanwhile, sugar disappeared from the shelves of retail shops after the Punjab government fixed its ex-mill price at Rs 165 per kg and the retail price at Rs173.
In Lahore, a standoff between dealers and sugar mill owners persists, resulting in sugar being unavailable at many shops.
Dealers claim that mill owners are refusing to supply sugar at the government-fixed ex-mill rate of Rs165 per kilogram.
In response to overpricing in Karachi, a crackdown was launched in which seven shops were sealed, two profiteers were arrested, and fines totaling Rs1.077 million were imposed.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed strict enforcement of the ex-mill price of Rs165 and the retail price of Rs173 per kilogram.
Sharif emphasized that strict action will be taken against anyone found violating the agreement and charging excessive prices.
