Social media and culture of abuse

Riyatullah Farooqui by Riyatullah Farooqui

Don’t know whether the treatment of female journalist Asma Shirazi on Twitter in recent days is similar to that of women journalists in other countries. I also don’t know if the negative but largely shameful use of social media is only in our country or in other countries as well.

There are two categories of social media abusers. The first category includes people who have created social media accounts, but they do not have the power to express themselves. These gentlemen can only read and respond to others. But if the post or tweet is against their views, then they are start insulting and abusing the user.

Such people are not ready to accept that any mistake can be made by their leader or party. The same is true of their preconceived notions. These ideas can be religious as well as political and social. They force you to adopt the same ideas and concepts that they have.

There are only moments of peace for you as long as you don’t touch the imaginary ideas that they have finalized. Your criticism can only be accepted when their perceptions or preferred leaders change as a result of a physical inclination or a movie-type traffic accident.

The second category of social media users includes such trolls whose job is to abuse. Trolls are active with five to ten fake IDs. If they are trolls of a liberal party, then their ID could be Che Guevara. These other types of IDs also belong to some imams of mosques and madrassas who are not professional trolls. They just sincerely defend Islam through abuse.

Because such imams believe that abuse is permissible if it is the result of religious pride. In the past, religious pride was the name of something else, both at the public and private levels. But nowadays only Maulvi Sahib’s anger has the status of religious honor.

Both major parties have a whole army of trolls. In front of them is a complete list of people whose words are read or listened to carefully. So they patrol their Facebook wall or Twitter handles all day long. Under normal circumstances, they harass them on their own posts or tweets. But if something big comes up from someone, then they create trends. These trends are always negative.

Positive trends can be seen in only two cases. One is that Pakistan wins a cup or a trophy, or a big personality dies. Although PTI is notorious for negative trends, but N-League trolls are also not behind. The distinguishing feature of this social media gang of N-League is that they include some well-known village personalities.

Only a person who has a heart attached to the culture of abuse can defend an abuser. The trend in this chapter is that if a famous religious abuser was killed, then his fans awarded him with titles, including Shaheed Islam. The person whose inheritance also contains posts about mother and sister’s abuse, you can give him nothing but du’a after death!
