Karachi has ushered in a new era of digital traffic enforcement, making history by becoming the first city in Pakistan to officially launch a drone-based e-challan system.

The new drone fleet began operations today on Friday, initially targeting high-congestion commercial areas known for chronic parking issues.
The drones are actively monitoring areas including Saddar, Zaib-un-Nisa Street, Preedy, and Empress Market.
Equipped with advanced, high-resolution cameras, the drones are linked directly to the city’s Safe City network.
They are recording violations such as no-parking, double-parking, and even triple-parking in real time.
Trained traffic police personnel are operating the drones. Confirmed violations, verified by the photographic and video evidence, are being instantly converted into e-challans, which are then dispatched to the vehicle owners’ registered addresses.

The system is designed to minimize the need for physical interaction between traffic police officers and the public, which is expected to reduce on-ground disputes and curb instances of corruption.
By relying solely on irrefutable, verifiable footage, the new method is anticipated to bring more transparency to the enforcement process, complementing the existing network of fixed AI-enabled CCTV cameras already issuing e-challans under the city’s TRACS (Traffic Regulation and Citation System) initiative.
This technological leap is part of Karachi’s broader Smart City initiative, signaling a move towards automated, data-driven governance to ensure better compliance with traffic laws.
