Selection criticism: PCB responds to Senator’s statement

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has replied to the critical statement made by Senator Mushahidullah Khan over the ‘sifarish’ (unjustified recommendation of cricketers Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal.
These comments caught media attention as both players had given chances to play in the recent T20 series at home-ground against Sri Lanka. However, both players remained unsuccessful and did not perform up to the mark.
In the statement, PCB said, “Firstly, Misbah-ul-Haq, along with the selection committee, is completely empowered to select the best available players to represent Pakistan, taking into account the player performances, form, fitness and using his own judgement, assessment and insight — a right he has earned through his illustrious career.”
The statement further added, “Secondly, the PCB encourages and ensures the independence of its selectors enabling them to work without any fear or favour. This key practice was maintained in the selection of the Pakistan cricket team for the series against Sri Lanka, and neither Misbah was influenced by the PCB nor by the upper circles.”
On the selection of Akmal and Shehzad, PCB maintained that both players were selected after their performances in last Pakistan Super League (PSL).
