KARACHI: Eight point buses have been restored at the University of Karachi to improve transportation facilities for students. An inauguration ceremony was held under the auspices of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), attended by Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman and Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Monem Zafar Khan.
According to an IJT spokesperson, the restoration of the buses was made possible with the cooperation of various town administrations. The initiative is expected to help ease students’ commuting difficulties and improve access to transportation.
Addressing the ceremony, University of Karachi Vice Chancellor Waseem Qazi said the university was working to establish an incubation centre and introduce a Learning Management System (LMS) for students.
He said the university was also working to make classroom learning materials available on mobile phones within the next three to four months. The initiative would allow students to revisit lectures and review academic content at their convenience.
Speaking at the event, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said student unions had managed transport services in the past and maintained that the restoration of student unions was a right of students.
He also pointed out that many students travelling to the university relied on motorcycles because of inadequate public transport facilities.
Commenting on fuel taxation, the Jamaat-e-Islami chief criticised the taxes and levies imposed on petrol, saying consumers were paying substantial amounts in additional charges and duties.
