KARACHI: Another person has died of rabies in Sindh after being bitten by a dog, taking the province’s reported rabies death toll to 38 this year.

The deceased, identified as 38-year-old Nematullah, was a resident of Nohario in the Diplo taluka of Tharparkar district. According to a spokesperson for Indus Hospital, he died while receiving treatment at the hospital in Karachi.

The spokesperson said Nematullah had been bitten by a suspected rabid dog approximately two and a half months earlier. He received four doses of the rabies vaccine at the Taluka Headquarters (THQ) Hospital in Diplo between July 25 and August 8.

According to the spokesperson, the patient was transferred to Indus Hospital in Karachi on October 7 after developing severe symptoms of rabies.

A medical assessment reportedly found that the wound had not been properly washed or cleaned at the time of the incident.

Rabies Deaths Reported at Hospitals Across Sindh
Hospital records indicate that 29 people have died following dog bites at Indus Hospital in Karachi so far this year. One additional death has been reported at Indus Hospital in Badin.

Meanwhile, eight patients have died of rabies at Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), according to the figures provided.

These reported fatalities bring the total number of rabies-related deaths across Sindh to 38 this year.

More Than 15,000 Dog-Bite Cases Reported
The Indus Hospital spokesperson further revealed that more than 15,000 dog-bite cases had been brought to the hospital for treatment so far this year.

The figures highlight the continuing public health concern posed by dog bites and the risk of rabies across the province. The latest death has renewed attention on the importance of prompt wound cleaning and timely medical treatment following a dog bite.
