Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has filed an urgent petition in the Islamabad High Court seeking his release from prison, citing serious security concerns amid rising tensions between Pakistan and India. The petition warns that Khan, a former prime minister, could be at risk of targeted drone strikes in the event of further escalation.
Khan has been held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for nearly two years while facing multiple legal cases, primarily related to corruption—charges he maintains are politically driven.
PTI filed the plea on Friday, describing the situation as a “national emergency” as military exchanges, including drone and artillery fire, intensify along the India-Pakistan border.
Zulfikar Bukhari, a senior PTI leader and close adviser to Khan, was quoted as saying in The Independent that ensuring Khan’s safety is the party’s top priority. He stressed that, in a moment of national crisis, the release of the country’s most unifying and widely supported leader is essential.
“We are on the brink of a full-scale conflict with India,” Bukhari said from the UK. “At a time like this, the presence of Imran Khan at the forefront is crucial for national unity. We remain hopeful the court will grant the petition in the interest of national integrity.”
