RAWALPINDI: A professional swimmer, who was also an employee of an intelligence agency, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Dhok Faryal area of Jatli town in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.
The victim had represented the country in various international swimming competitions, including the Olympics and World Swimming Championship held in Abu Dhabi last year.
A police spokesperson said that the victim – identified as Mustafa – was on a visit to his home during the departmental leaves and standing outside his residence when he was gunned down.
Upon receiving information, the law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene of the incident and shifted the body to tehsil headquarters hospital for medico-legal formalities.
Meanwhile, City Police Officer (CPO) Sajid Kayani has taken notice of the incident and directed sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Gujjar Khan to probe the case from different angles and arrest the culprits immediately.
According to the police, legal action has been initiated and an investigation was being carried out into the incident from all angles.
In October last year, a young employee of an intelligence agency was also shot dead by armed robbers at his resistance during a robbery bid in Korangi, Karachi.
