KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will hold a meeting of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) today to deliberate over its standing with the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).
The meeting will be chaired by former president Asif Ali Zardari and PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at 1PM at at Bilawal House. The CEC meeting will discuss the current political situation and the relations between the opposition parties. Several members will attend the meeting via video link due to the coronavirus situation.
PPP senior leader Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, in a statement issued on Wednesday, had said the party’s CEC would discuss the ongoing political situation in the country and the PDM show-cause notice issue as well. Bukhari had said the PPP had earlier postponed the CEC meeting due to the National Assembly and Senate sessions.
The PPP had earlier delayed the CEC meeting convened to decide on resignations from assemblies. PPP had sought time to deliberate on the matter while all major parties had shown their willingness for the move.

Earlier this month, the PDM issued notices to the PPP and ANP over alleged violation of consensus decisions and principles of the multi-party opposition alliance.
PDM chief Fazlur Rehman has approved the issuance of show-cause notices to both parties sent by PDM’s Secretary-General and PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
The PPP was asked to explain its conduct of getting appointed its candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani as Leader of Opposition in Senate by defying the consensus decision of component parties.
The notice is issued to the ANP for supporting the PPP in its efforts to get Gilani designated by roping in government’s ally Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) senators to constitute major support. The notices stated that both parties have harmed opposition alliance and movement.

The ANP eventually decided to part ways with the PDM after being served a show-cause notice while the PPP is expected to make its decision.
ANP Vice President Ameer Haider Hoti announces to part ways with the PDM, saying that certain political groups have “hijacked” the opposition alliance. He said that no one has the authority to issue a show-cause notice to the ANP. He said that any consultation should have been made during the meeting of the heads of PDM.
