ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s local mobile phone manufacturing sector has expanded significantly, with 37 companies currently producing mobile phones in the country. According to the Engineering Development Board (EDB), more than 35 million mobile phones have been manufactured locally in Pakistan so far.
The EDB said that most major mobile phone brands, except Apple, are now manufacturing their devices in Pakistan. The government is also making efforts to attract Apple to establish local manufacturing operations in the country.
Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT and Telecom, Syed Amin-ul-Haque, welcomed the growth of local mobile phone manufacturing. He stressed that Pakistan should focus on producing affordable and high-quality smartphones, particularly 4G and 5G devices.
IT Secretary Zarar Hasham said that around 200 million people in Pakistan currently use mobile phones, representing a significant market for the country’s local mobile phone industry.
According to government officials, further expansion of local manufacturing could make smartphones more affordable for consumers, create additional employment opportunities, and reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported mobile phones.
