ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on IT and Telecommunication has expressed serious concerns over the poor quality of mobile and internet services across Pakistan. Committee members also questioned the performance of telecom operators and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

During the meeting, members reviewed complaints regarding weak signals, dropped calls, and unstable internet services. Committee member Ahmed Atiq said that mobile service issues were being reported in around 70% of areas, while some members described the quality of services in nearly 90% of the country as unsatisfactory.

Dr. Mahesh Kumar criticized Ufone over poor service quality, while the committee decided to summon representatives of Jazz, Zong, and Ufone at its next meeting to address the issue.

The meeting also highlighted mobile coverage problems in several areas, including the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. Officials said that substandard equipment and weak infrastructure were among the factors contributing to poor service quality.

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, telecom operators have received 48 show-cause notices and 22 warning letters over the past few years. Fines amounting to Rs 68.9 million have also been imposed for violations related to service quality.

Committee members said that notices and penalties alone were not enough and that consumers should see a clear improvement in service quality. The committee called for better network performance and a more effective monitoring system.
