Amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States and the dark clouds of war, Pakistan has emerged as a pivotal mediator, where it is making vigorous efforts to create balance and harmony between the demands of both sides by leveraging its diplomatic insight.
Iran’s state media has confirmed that Tehran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is reviewing in detail the response received from the United States via Pakistan. This response relates to Iran’s latest proposal aimed at reducing ongoing tensions and ending potential war risks through negotiations. This development is being seen as a crucial diplomatic breakthrough in the region, as both sides appear to be moving notably closer to direct messaging through a mediation channel for the first time.
During this diplomatic process, Iran’s official news agency has reported that Pakistan’s CDF, Field Marshal Asim Munir may soon visit Tehran, which would be his second visit amid ongoing regional tensions. This visit is part of Pakistan’s continuous efforts aimed at reducing the growing gap between Washington and Tehran. This visit is being regarded as a highly significant advancement at both military and diplomatic levels.
Undoubtedly, it is the result of Pakistan’s persistent diplomatic efforts and consultations with close friendly countries such as China that U.S. President Donald Trump’s final intent to launch attacks on Iran twice was postponed, which he himself has also acknowledged, although at one point it appeared that negotiations had completely stalled and both countries were unwilling to step back from their hardline positions.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated on this occasion that all paths for a diplomatic solution with the United States are still open from Iran’s side; however, he also warned that attempts to force Iran through pressure or threats are “nothing but an illusion.” His statement is being considered a central point of Tehran’s current negotiation strategy, which includes a delicate blend of flexibility and firmness.
Although the most complex and fundamental issue in this dispute has remained the uranium enrichment program, which in the past emerged as a major cause of war, recent diplomatic activities and continuous contacts including those of Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and other senior officials have sparked hope that flexibility is being shown by both sides, including various proposals such as suspending or reducing the enrichment for 20 years to more or less 10 years.
On the other hand, global energy crises and economic pressure, especially fears of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, have kept the international community deeply anxious as the common man is suffering under inflationary pressure. In this context, after Hajj and Eid al-Adha, an important meeting is expected in Islamabad, where progress is anticipated on a memorandum of understanding, opening the window for 30-day talks process for finalization of final deal between the parties.
Internally, Donald Trump is also facing severe political pressure and the influence of the Israeli lobby, where opposition from some members of his own party in the U.S. Congress and Senate, along with fears of upcoming election results, has put him in a defensive position, as in the absence of a peaceful resolution of this conflict he may face serious political risks such as impeachment and the implementation of the 25th Amendment.
The United Arab Emirates has strongly demanded that Iraq immediately stop drone attacks originating from its territory. This demand came after an incident in which an attempt was made to target an Emirati civilian nuclear plant. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made it clear that such actions pose a grave threat to the stability of the entire region.
The situation in Lebanon is also tense, where according to the Ministry of Health, more than 20 people have been killed in recent Israeli attacks, while the ceasefire agreement appears to be practically ineffective. Jordan has also shot down an unidentified drone that entered its airspace, while Hezbollah has claimed that its fighters carried out 24 attacks on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
During the negotiation and mediation process, the role of China as one of the most important countries in the region cannot be ignored, as it holds immense strategic weight. Its 400 billion dollar strategic agreement with Iran and its long-standing 75-year tested friendship with Pakistan have further strengthened this reconciliation process, while Pakistan is also ensuring through continuous consultation with Beijing that efforts for peace and stability in the region are made fruitful.
Historically, China has always supported Pakistan in difficult times and has vetoed resolutions against Pakistan’s interests at forums such as the United Nations’ Security Council. Therefore, in the context of the current Iran conflict and rising tensions in the Middle East, China’s involvement is also considered indispensable for establishing peace.
It is also worth noting that taking advantage of this period of ceasefire, both Iran and the United States have reorganized their military and logistical capabilities, and according to U.S. media reports, the United States also suffered the loss of several aircraft in the previous confrontation. However, Iran’s resistance and the changing regional situation has also brought new dynamics in the geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape, therefore the balance of power is rapidly shifting from the Global North toward the Global South, in which Pakistan’s mediation efforts may prove to be a landmark contribution in shaping a new regional security paradigm.
