The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced a merit-based electric bike scheme for female college and university students and working women across the province to promote clean transportation and safer mobility.

Addressing the 57th meeting of the provincial cabinet, officials said the first phase of the electric vehicle (EV) bike scheme would be launched soon. The electric bikes will be distributed strictly on merit among eligible female students and working women.

The initiative is aimed at reducing dependence on conventional fuel, lowering air pollution and promoting a cleaner and greener environment in KP.

The government expects the scheme to provide women with a more affordable and convenient mode of transportation while supporting its broader environmental goals.

Officials said the provincial government would introduce an electric rickshaw scheme after the launch of the EV bike initiative. Work is also being accelerated on electric bus projects for divisional headquarters across the province.

The cabinet further directed relevant authorities to explore opportunities for local manufacturing of electric vehicles in KP.
