A man who allegedly hurled threats against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and key members of the Sharif family on social media has been arrested in Central London, local authorities confirmed on Saturday evening.
The suspect, identified as Gulfam, reportedly used social media platforms, including TikTok, to post threatening videos targeting the Sharif family. Sources close to the investigation claim that Gulfam issued severe warnings about the potential consequences for the family, with his messages escalating in tone and intensity over time. The content, which was widely shared and viewed, drew immediate attention from both Pakistani authorities and the public.
Khurram Butt, a prominent member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, confirmed the arrest in a statement, praising the swift response of London’s Metropolitan Police. “We are grateful for the timely and decisive action taken by the authorities in the UK. This arrest demonstrates the commitment to ensuring the safety and security of individuals, regardless of their political affiliation,” Butt said.
The arrest took place late on Saturday evening in Central London. Gulfam was apprehended without incident and is currently in custody pending further investigation. Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the man was taken into custody on suspicion of making threats of violence and harassment through electronic communications.
Sources say the investigation is ongoing, and authorities are looking into the extent of Gulfam’s online activities. It is believed he posted multiple videos on TikTok, some of which contained direct threats and offensive language targeting the Sharif family.
The incident has raised concerns about the use of social media platforms for inciting violence and spreading harmful rhetoric. Pakistani officials have called for greater international cooperation in addressing cyber threats, especially in cases involving high-profile public figures.
While details about Gulfam’s background remain sparse, it is understood that he had been active on social media for a number of months before his arrest. Authorities are exploring whether his actions were part of a broader campaign of online harassment targeting the Sharif family.
The arrest is likely to prompt further discussions about the regulation of social media platforms and the legal boundaries surrounding online threats, particularly in politically sensitive cases involving public figures.
PML-N leaders have expressed relief over Gulfam’s arrest but have also reiterated the importance of safeguarding individuals from harmful online abuse. “We will continue to work with authorities to ensure that anyone attempting to incite violence or spread hate is held accountable,” Khurram Butt added.
As of now, Gulfam has not made a public statement, and his legal representatives have not issued any comments regarding his arrest. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
