9 people were killed and 4 others were injured after an explosion occurred near the Red Fort (Lal Qila) Metro Station in New Delhi on Monday evening, officials said.
According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), the blast took place in a parked van near Gate No. 1 of the metro station. The explosion triggered a fire that engulfed three to four nearby vehicles, causing extensive damage.
“DFS received a call about an explosion near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, after which multiple vehicles caught fire,” the department said in a statement. Fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the site, and the blaze was brought under control.
The nature and cause of the blast remain under investigation, though officials described its intensity as severe. The site, adjacent to Chandni Chowk, one of Delhi’s busiest markets, was quickly cordoned off by police and security personnel.
Emergency teams transported the injured to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the incident was accidental or deliberate, as investigations continue.
