The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee on Monday announced that the Muharram moon has not been sighted in the country, hence the first of Muharram will fall on June 17 (Wednesday).
Accordingly, the Ashura (Muharram 10) will be observed on July 26 (Friday).
The announcement was made by Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad following a meeting held at Lahore’s Badshahi Mosque.
Simultaneously, zonal and district Ruet-e-Hilal Committees convened at their respective headquarters across the country.
Muharram is a sacred month of mourning, particularly observed by Shia Muslims around the world. It marks the remembrance of the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, during which Imam Husain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), was martyred.
Many of his family members and companions also lost their lives, while others endured immense suffering in the aftermath of the tragedy.
