KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Senator Farooq Sattar has issued a firm and categorical position on the issue of the Sindh governorship, saying the party remains focused on its political consultations and messaging and expressed confidence that its efforts will yield results.
Speaking on a private TV program, Sattar said important consultations have been held in connection with the governorship matter, adding that it was reviewed seriously over the last two days. “There has been remarkable, meaningful and positive progress on it. I am sure that our efforts will not go in vain,” he said.
His remarks came following statements by another MQM leader, Mustafa Kamal, who announced plans to launch countrywide protest movements against what he termed the “ignoring of urban Sindh” starting July 26. Sattar’s comments also referenced advice from political figure Mahmood Moulvi, who urged MQM to part ways with the government to demonstrate sincerity regarding Karachi and related issues.
Sattar further clarified that the return of Kamran Tessori to the governorship is MQM party policy. He said that during talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, discussions included the possibility of sitting in the opposition, noting that MQM had indicated it could become allies “like the PPP.”
The MQM senator said there was “no reason” to remove Kamran Tesori from office and claimed later justification had been offered that the PPP insisted the (N) League bring forward its own governor. “If we cannot even save the governorship, then the voters will question us,” Sattar said.
Concluding his remarks, he stated that the governorship of Sindh belongs to MQM and reiterated the party’s stance that it would either “take it back” or “sit in the opposition,” depending on developments.
