ISLAMABAD: Mayor Islamabad Sheikh Ansar Aziz has resigned from his post today (Tuesday), months after he was restored by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) after being suspended over corruption allegations.
According to details, Sheikh Ansar Aziz has submitted his resignation to the Election Commission of Pakistan for approval. Aziz, who belongs to PML-N, resigned from his post fourth months ahead of the completion of his tenure.
Meanwhile, spokesperson of Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation has confirmed the development, however, he expressed his unawareness regarding the reasons behind the move.
Earlier this year, a reference had been filed against Aziz in which it was alleged that he was abusing his powers, using staff for personal use, and operating official vehicles that were reportedly beyond his entitlement.
In this regard, the federal government suspended Sheikh Ansar Aziz for 90 days over corruption charges. On May 21, the Islamabad High Court restored Sheikh Anser Aziz as Islamabad mayor and suspended the federal government’s notification.
