Karachi: Police have begun detaining Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers in the Numaish Chowrangi area following an attack on police personnel during a protest on Wednesday.
According to police officials, PTI activists stopped a police mobile van and pelted it with stones, prompting law enforcement to respond with tear gas shelling to disperse the crowd.
Viral videos circulating on social media show protesters surrounding the police vehicle and throwing stones amid tense scenes.
Police claimed that tear gas shells were also recovered from the possession of some detained PTI workers. So far, around 30 activists have been arrested, while one police officer sustained injuries during the clashes.
Meanwhile, a PTI Karachi spokesperson said that Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sohail Afridi, is expected to arrive at Mazar-e-Quaid shortly.
Ahead of the PTI rally, heavy police contingents were deployed in and around Mazar-e-Quaid as part of security arrangements.
Authorities closed one track of the road from People’s Chowrangi towards Mazar-e-Quaid, both tracks leading from Khudadad Colony, and the road connecting Gurumandir to Numaish Signal to maintain law and order.
Security remains on high alert as the situation continues to be monitored.
