KARACHI: The Karachi University Road BRT project has once again come under scrutiny, this time in the courtroom with claim for damages worth more than Rs172 million filed by the son of a deceased citizen, alleging negligence during construction of the Red Line BRT project.
Senior Civil Judge Malir heard the case and issued notices to the Sindh government, Malir Cantonment Board, the project director, and the contractor. The matter has been fixed for September 21.
Advocate Usman Farooq, representing the petitioner, argued that in January this year, citizen Shahid was returning home with his family when his vehicle collided with a barrier near Jinnah Avenue. Shahid died in the accident, while his wife and child sustained injuries. The lawyer claimed the barrier lacked reflectors and warning signs, and poor lighting made it invisible at night.
Farooq said the accident occurred due to inadequate safety measures during the Karachi University Road BRT construction. He stressed that it was the duty of the responsible parties to ensure safe passage for commuters.
Background on FWO Karachi BRT completion
It may be recalled here that the FWO’s Karachi BRT completion drive was announced earlier this year after the Sindh government reassigned the project from a private contractor to the Frontier Works Organization.
The move followed years of delays, dust pollution, and traffic bottlenecks that frustrated residents. Officials now insist strict monitoring is in place to prevent further lapses.
The petition highlights broader concerns about safety standards in mega transport projects. With the Red Line corridor nearing completion, the case underscores the need for accountability and proper safeguards to protect commuters.
Legal experts believe if the court rules in favor of the petitioner, it could set a precedent for damages claims linked to public infrastructure projects in Karachi.
