The Government of Sindh has terminated the construction contract for the long-delayed BRT Red Line project in Karachi and plans to re-award it on an emergency basis, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed on Wednesday.
The cancellation specifically affects the Mosamiyat–Numaish section of the project. Although construction resumed in November after several hurdles were cleared following the chief minister’s intervention, no definitive completion timeline has been announced. Meanwhile, commuters along University Road continue to face significant daily disruptions.
The contractor has challenged the authorities’ decision to seal the project office and site, an action taken by local officials including the mukhtiarkar, police, and the Deputy Commissioner (East).
The contractor argued that costly machinery remains at the site and has been left idle since the sealing.
Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court on Wednesday heard a petition contesting the government’s move. A two-member bench headed by Justice Mohammad Saleem Jessar directed that an observer be appointed to visit and assess the situation at the BRT Red Line project site.
