Karachi is set to witness a groundbreaking development in its healthcare sector, as a high-level Chinese delegation has announced plans to build a state-of-the-art medical city in the city. With a hefty investment of $1 billion, the project is expected to generate 50,000 new jobs and significantly enhance the region’s medical infrastructure.
The announcement was made during a joint meeting of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI)’s Pakistan-China Business Council and its Central Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Investment. Meng Xiao Wei, President of the China-Pakistan Research and Innovation Enterprises Alliance, detailed the ambitious scope of the project, which will include advanced manufacturing facilities for medical equipment, a world-class medical college, training programs, and various healthcare businesses. The initiative is slated to be completed within three years, with strong backing from the Pakistan-China Medical Association.
FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh hailed the project as a game-changer for Pakistan’s healthcare industry, particularly for Karachi. He emphasized that the medical city would not only raise the standard of healthcare in the country but also create a ripple effect on the local economy.
The development will be spearheaded by 35 Chinese business groups listed on the Chinese Stock Exchange, bringing a wealth of expertise and investment to the region. Shabbir Mansha, Chairman of FPCCI’s Pakistan-China Business Council, also noted that the delegation is keen on exploring opportunities in other sectors such as solar energy, agriculture, and electric vehicles, signaling potential for broader bilateral collaboration.
