Bollywood’s iconic filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2018 epic Padmaavat is set to make a grand return to theaters on its seventh anniversary on 24 January.
The announcement was made on social media by the filmmakers, who wrote: “Witness the epic tale on the big screen again. #Padmaavat in cinemas on 24th January.”
The film, which features Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles, will once again immerse audiences in its larger-than-life narrative. Viacom 18 Studios shared a new poster showcasing the trio of stars.
Padmaavat, set in the 13th century, tells the dramatic story of Queen Padmavati (played by Deepika Padukone), renowned for her beauty and wisdom, and her husband, Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor), the ruler of Mewar. The plot unfolds as the ambitious Sultan Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) sets his sights on Chittor, driven by obsession with Padmavati. The queen, determined to protect her kingdom and its values, takes extreme measures to defend her people and her honor.
The film is adapted from the epic poem Padmavat by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Upon its release in 2018, the film sparked significant controversy, particularly among Rajput groups, who criticized the portrayal of Queen Padmavati. During filming in 2017, Bhansali was even attacked by members of the Karni Sena, a Rajput group, who staged a protest at Jaipur’s Jaigarh Fort, where the movie was being shot. Despite the controversy, Padmaavat went on to become a major box office success.
Now, as the film returns to theaters, fans will once again experience the grandeur of Bhansali’s vision on the big screen.
