KARACHI: Another case of the deadly brain‑eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri has been confirmed in Karachi, where a 44‑year‑old man has developed a severe brain infection, hospital officials said on Tuesday.
According to a private hospital spokesperson, the patient’s condition is critical. He has been shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and placed on a ventilator.
Health authorities noted that Sindh has already recorded four fatalities from Naegleria fowleri this year, all in Karachi. The most recent death was reported in late June, when a 17‑year‑old succumbed to the infection after hospitalisation.
Provincial health department data shows that the earlier three deaths in 2025 also occurred in Karachi, underscoring the city’s vulnerability to the rare but often fatal amoebic infection.
Medical experts continue to warn that Naegleria fowleri thrives in warm freshwater and can enter the body through the nasal passages, leading to a rapidly progressing brain infection. Preventive measures, including the use of boiled or chlorinated water for ablution and swimming, have been repeatedly advised by health officials.
