Israeli settlers stormed a mosque in the occupied West Bank, setting fire to its entrance and vandalising the property. The settlers were captured on CCTV defacing the walls of the mosque with hateful messages.
The incident occurred at the Bar al-Walidain mosque in the village of Marda. Salfit Governor Abdallah Kamil confirmed that Jewish settlers attacked and burned the mosque early on Friday morning.
The settlers also spray-painted the mosque’s walls with offensive slogans, including “Death to Arabs” in Hebrew.
A video released from the mosque shows individuals, including a masked man, spray-painting the walls.
Local Palestinians managed to contain the fire before it could fully engulf the mosque.
The head of local village council of Marda described the attack as a “systemic terror attack.”
“This is an extremely serious incident, and we will take all necessary actions to bring those responsible to justice,” Israeli police stated in a press release.
International law considers Israeli settlements on Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank to be illegal.
Since the onset of Israel’s military operations in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, Israeli settlers have increasingly targeted Palestinians in a series of systemic attacks.
At least 804 people have been killed, with many others arrested or subjected to harassment by the Israeli military.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International have condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza as war crimes and genocide.
The overall Palestinian death toll since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza has reached at least 45,206 with more than 107,512 wounded. Thousands more remain trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings.
