There has always been disagreement among scholars regarding music. One group has been convinced that it is absolutely haraam, while another has said that music is not bad in itself, but there are some vulgarities that are associated with it, then it is definitely forbidden. Those who say that it is haraam use verse 6 of the Holy Quran as an argument, the translation of which is as follows:
Translation: And there are some people who buy things that make them heedless of Allah. That they may lead people astray from the way of Allah. , And make fun of it. They will have a torment that will humiliate them. (Surah Luqman verse no. 6)
They make an argument from this verse, but this argument does not work because they claim that the polytheistic merchant of Makkah, Nadr ibn Harithah, used to hold music concerts so that people would engage in these concerts instead of going to the Prophet. But the problem is that the word “hadith” appears in this blessed verse, which is never used in the sense of music. The singer’s song is the only thing for which the word “hadith” can be used, but those who call music haraam say and write that if a word is sung without musical instruments, it is halal. It is as if the thing in the whole item which has the capacity to be called “Hadith” has become halal and the instrument has become haraam even with the word which is not used for it.
Even if it is assumed that this verse was revealed with reference to singing and the word hadith here refers to singing, then those who say that this song is absolutely haraam are more likely to say that it is unlawful with the inclusion of some alays. This is because the word “hadith” did not come with the word “absolute” but with the adjective “lohu”, which means it’s about to be the most delusional time of the year, as well. Now the question is, what is this verse really about and what is meant by “hadith” here? See the answer to this question in the words of Mufti Taqi Usmani.
The effect of the Holy Quran was such that even those who had not yet become believers used to recite the Holy Quran in secret, as a result of which some people even converted to Islam. The leaders of non-muslims use to consider it as threat and wanted to create something more interesting than the Holy Quran that would make people stop listening to the Holy Quran. They bought books on the stories of the kings there, and in some traditions he also bought a singing slave girl from there, and said to the people, “Muhammad narrates to you the stories of Aad and Thamud. I find you more interesting than them.” We will tell stories and songs, so people started gathering around him. This verse refers to this incident, and it also states the principle that any distraction that makes a person careless and indifferent to his religious duties is unlawful. Only those sports and recreational pursuits which have some benefit, such as physical or mental exercise, or to relieve fatigue, and which do not cause any harm to anyone, nor should they distract man from his religious duties, are permissible. (Explanation of the Quran – Page No. 800).
This is the footnote written by Mufti Taqi Usmani on the above verse of Surah Luqman. And in which he mentions singer in the words: “It comes in some traditions.” If the verse was related to music, he would have made the main mention of music and would have written stories for story books. He also bought story books. “And most importantly, the word” hadith “is associated with books, not music.”
Scholars who call singing absolutely haraam also offer many traditions as evidence, but most of them are weak traditions. The strongest narration he has is the following hadith of Sahih Bukhari.
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Malik al-Ash’ari that the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said: There will be some people in my ummah who will make immorality, silk, alcohol and music lawful. Some of these arrogant people will stay in their bungalows on the tops of the mountains and when a needy man goes to them to meet their needs, they will avoid him by asking him to come tomorrow. Allah will cause the mountain to fall on them at night and will make some of them like monkeys and pigs till the Day of Resurrection (Bukhari, Kitab al-Ashraba, Hadith 5268).
In response to this narration, another group of scholars says that Imam Bukhari has determined this narration in the “Kitab al-Ashraba” and what this narration is really about. Secondly, there are four different narrations in it. Not to mention different things, but here is a package called “Dance Party”, in which these four things are in full swing and which the rich kind of luxury people have been doing all the time, so in this tradition also complete Not only are these wealthy luxuries clearly mentioned but their famous symbols are also mentioned.
These signs are most evident today, in the case of those who have built hundreds of canal houses on the hills and say this when a poor person goes to them for some need.
“Muaf karo baba kal anaaa!”
This second group of scholars cites two traditions of Sahih Bukhari in support of their position.
First Ruet … Syed Bibi Aisha (RA) said: When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH ) entered my house, I had two daughters who were singing the song of Jang-e-Baath. He came and lay down on my bed and turned to the other side. When Hazrat Abu Bakr came to the house, he said: Satanic song with the Messenger of Allah? The Prophet (PBUH) turned and said: “Leave them alone.” Then when Abu Bakr turned to the other side, I signaled him to leave. Sudanese people were playing with their spears and shields. I said to the Messenger of Allah or he did say himrself: “Do you want to see this?” I said yes.” So he made me stand behind him and my face was with yours. You were saying: “Very well, Banu Arfada.” When I got tired you said: “Enough.” Then he said: “Go.” (Bukhari, Kitab al-Jihad, Hadith 2750).
Discussing this tradition, the scholars of the other group say that nothing absolutely haraam can be halal on Eid or any other occasion of happiness. Therefore, alcohol, adultery, usury and gold and silk are haraam for men, so they are haraam in all cases. None of these things become halal on the day of Eid. Of course, there are many permissible things that are with the common people but not with the Prophet, and Hazrat Abu Bakr was surprised and said, “The house and song of the Messenger of Allah?”
The second tradition … Rabi ‘bint Mu’adh ibn’ Afra ‘narrates that when she was seated as a bride, the Prophet (PBUH) came. You sit here on my bed like you guys. Then some of our girls started playing the tambourine and started praising my father and uncle who were martyred on the day of the battle of Badr. One of them said, “We have prophet who know what will come tomorrow.” He said: Leave it and sing what you used to sing. (Bukhari, Kitab al-Nikah, Hadith 4852)
Another group of scholars says that these two traditions narrate the story of ceremonies where songs were sung in the presence of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).
The fact is that the problem with music is not unanimous but divisive. One group of scholars calls it absolutely haraam, while another calls only music that contains nonsense in the lyrics or any other evil that Islam has banned. And the reality is that these other groups have the overwhelming majority. But since the first group comes to the fore in this case, the people of the second group listen to the music secretly to avoid this pitfall, but if a common man asks, they cut it off by saying it is haraam. One of the great tragedies of the religious class is that if one of these groups is convinced of the sanctity of something, it will resort to extremism to such an extent that it will not give up. This is exactly the spectacle we have seen in the issue of Islamic banking. Therefore, the group that believed in sanctity did not shy away from using slander and insults against Mufti Taqi Usmani. I have heard them give these naked abuses with my ears. And I can bear witness to it on the Day of Judgment.
