A completely unnecessary controversy has been created on the construction of a temple in Islamabad. The move which should have appreciated for promoting tolerance and religious harmony has now been mired in controversy and efforts are being made to stop it.
The Islamabad High Court was approached and the construction has been stopped. The right-wing was perturbed over the use of public funds and land allotment for the project. Prime Minister Imran Khan had approved Rs100 million for the project but the petitioner wanted it stopped.
Many were concerned over the sheer size of the temple to be built on 20,000 sq. feet claiming that a few hundred Hindus lived in Islamabad. Others pointed out there was already a temple at Saidpur – a tourist site of the outskirts of the city – that should be renovated rather than building a new one.
The controversy surrounding the temple was unprecedented. Even Punjab Assembly Speaker raised concerns stating that he opposed building a temple in Islamabad and not anywhere else. This shows the regressive mindset that has filled our society. We have been quick to condemn similar incidents in India such as the Babri mosque while we face similar issues.
The constitution of Pakistan guarantees equal rights to all citizens including minorities. Despite the instances of religious discrimination and intolerance, the state must ensure their rights, liberties, and freedoms are protected. They have the freedom to visit and build their places of worship.
The Hindu community has grown in Islamabad as many moved from Sindh and Balochistan to escape persecution. There was a growing need for a new temple as none had been built since independence. The government has made huge strides for the protection of minorities and plans to renovate hundreds of temples.
The Kartarpur Corridor was also part of efforts to promote inter-faith harmony which was welcomed by the Sikh community. Pakistan still has a dismal record regarding minority rights and more efforts are needed to end the systematic discrimination and prejudices against them.
The criticism on the building of the temple is completely unwarranted and uncalled for. The efforts to stop the construction will worsen our image and human rights record. We must ensure that minorities are protected and given their due rights.
