NEW DELHI: India’s Ravichandran Ashwin reclaimed the top spot in the Test bowler’s rankings on Wednesday following his stunning performance final Test against England last week.
For India’s spin spearhead, who concluded the series with 26 wickets in the lead, the 100th Test match in Dharamsala was an unforgettable experience.
At the top of the Test rankings, Ashwin overtook teammate Jasprit Bumrah after taking his 500th wicket in the third Test in Rajkot.
Josh Hazlewood of Australia moved up two spots and took six wickets in the second Test against New Zealand, forcing Bumrah to drop to third place.
Ashwin reached the top of the rankings for the sixth time in his career, and the 37-year-old had a memorable series against England.
Before returning to the team on the fourth day of the match, the off-spinner took a brief leave of absence from the Rajkot Test to meet with his ailing mother in Chennai.
Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, thanked India captain Rohit Sharma for letting him to be with his mother in Chennai when the Test was on.
“Rohit is a special person, an outstanding leader, with a golden heart,” the spinner said. “I saw it first-hand. I’d give my life for him on the field, that’s the kind of captain he is.”
