The federal government has decided not to extend the Rs 7.41 per unit electricity subsidy, which is ending from next month, sources revealed on Wednesday.
As per the sources, the subsidy of Rs7.41 per unit given by the federal government to electricity consumers for three months is ending from next month, while the government has decided not to extend it.
This relief package, which was announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in April 2025, will no longer be available from August. According to sources, the Prime Minister had also announced a concession of Rs 7.59 per unit for the industrial sector on the occasion of Eid on April 4.
This concessional package consisted of various quarterly adjustments. In the second quarter of April-June 2025, consumers were given a concession of Rs 1.90 per unit, while in the third quarter of May-July 2025, a concession of Rs 1.55 per unit was given.
In addition, a discount of Rs 1.71 per unit was also included under the adjustment in the prices of petroleum products, and Rs 0.90 per unit under the fuel price adjustment.
The final discount of Rs 1.55 per unit for the third quarter will be reflected in the July bill of the consumers. Sources also said that the June fuel cost adjustment, which will be included in the July bills, is likely to be negative.
On the other hand, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has also completed the hearing on the request for an increase in the price of electricity by Rs 0.10 per unit based on the May fuel cost adjustment.
